Films to Look Forward to in 2011

Let us take a look at what films to expect come 2011.

THE GREEN HORNET (January 14 – USA)
After years in development, comedian Seth Rogen and co-writing partner Evan Goldberg will finally be bringing the classic hero and his martial arts fighting sidekick Kato to life, under the direction of Michel Gondry. While Rogen himself plays the titular character and his alter ego Britt Reid, Taiwanese pop star turned actor Jay Chou will make his Hollywood debut as Kato. Chou replaces Stephen Chow, who was originally to have made his Hollywood star debut and directorial debut with the film, only to leave due to “creative differences”. The most popular version of the character still remains the short-lived 1966 version that starred Van Williams as the Green Hornet and Bruce Lee as Kato.

SHAOLIN (January 19 – Hong Kong/China)
Benny Chan (NEW POLICE STORY) directs a new story involving the Shaolin Temple. The film revolves a warlord (Andy Lau) betrayed by his best friend (Nicholas Tse) and forced to hide at the famous temple. Jackie Chan has a special appearance as a cook at the temple while Wu Jing, Xing Yu, and Yu Shaoqun play three monks who become Lau’s new allies. This is the first film since 1981′s SHAOLIN TEMPLE to be shot at the actual Shaolin Temple. Corey Yuen serves as the film’s action director.

KG: KARATE GIRL (February 5 – Japan)
High-kicking Rina Takeda returns after HIGH KICK GIRL! to star in a new film about a young karateka who must avenge the death of her father and retrieve a family heirloom, a centuries-old black belt. Takeda had been training hard for the film, which will be directed by Yoshikatsu Kimura. One can only hope they do away with the overdose of slow motion scenes that made fans dislike HIGH KICK GIRL!

SUCKER PUNCH (March 25 – USA)
WATCHMEN helmer Zack Snyder directs this tale that takes us inside the mind of a young mental patient. In her new alternate reality, she and four fellow women must attempt to escape from the hands of three villains. Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Jena Malone star as the heroines of the film. Serving as the film’s fight choreographer is Damon Caro, whose credits include NEVER BACK DOWN (2008).

KUNG FU PANDA 2 (May 27 – USA)
One word: Skidoosh! Jack Black returns as the voice of Po in this sequel to the hit 2008 animated film about a panda who is destined to be a mystical kung fu warrior. This time, along with the Furious Five, Po must join forces with new characters Master Croc (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and the Soothsayer (Michelle Yeoh) to take on the new villain, a peacock named Lord Shen (Gary Oldman).
